Lack of trusted inspection and shipping for expensive items when selling between cities. Willing to pay $80–130 per deal.

1. Describe the problem:

I found a very practical problem while trying to sell a used ESAB welding machine for about $1,000.

A buyer from a remote region is genuinely interested. We talked, he understands why he needs this equipment, and he is ready to spend around $1,500 including delivery and financing.

But the deal is stuck because of trust.

As a seller, I do not want to ship expensive equipment without payment. As a buyer, he does not want to send money before receiving the item.

Marketplace “safe deal” options are too expensive or too slow. In my case, the marketplace option would cost around $500 extra, and delivery could take 3–4 weeks. Regular transport companies can deliver much faster, around 3–7 days, but they do not provide a simple trusted inspection and handover process for private deals.

The missing piece is the “trusted first mile” of the transaction.

A possible service could work like this:

1. A trusted representative comes to the seller.
2. Checks that the item exists and matches the listing.
3. Records photos and video.
4. Verifies serial number, accessories and completeness.
5. Records a short working test if possible.
6. Packs the item or supervises packaging.
7. Hands it over to a transport company.
8. Fixes the tracking number and insurance details.
9. Sends a clear report to the buyer.

This could be useful for expensive used items: tools, welding machines, laptops, GPUs, musical equipment, servers, bicycles, rare components and small industrial equipment.

Current alternatives are fragmented: cargo surveyors are mostly B2B, marketplaces are expensive and slow, and transport companies only deliver the item but do not solve the trust problem between private buyer and seller.

I would pay around $80–$130 for such a service on a deal worth $1,000–$1,500, and more for expensive items or expert inspection.

I created a small discussion chat to explore this problem and possible MVP: Telegram

2. How often does the problem occur?

How often do you encounter the problem?

I do not encounter this problem every week, but it appears almost every time I try to buy or sell an expensive used item remotely.

For low-value items, people usually take the risk or refuse the deal. But once the item is worth around $800–$3,000 or more, the trust gap becomes a real blocker.

In my case, the current deal is for a used welding machine worth about $1,000, and the buyer is in a remote region. The same issue can happen with tools, laptops, GPUs, musical equipment, bicycles, servers, rare components, and small industrial equipment.

I have been experiencing this problem for several years whenever dealing with expensive second-hand items between cities. The current case made it especially clear because the buyer is ready to pay, the seller is ready to ship, transport companies can deliver fast, but there is no simple trusted inspection and handover layer for private deals.

3. What attempts have you made to solve the problem?

I have tried several existing options, but none of them fully solve the problem.

1. Marketplace safe deal / delivery

his is the most obvious option, but in my case it is too expensive and too slow. The marketplace option would add around $500 to the deal and delivery could take 3–4 weeks.

2. Regular transport companies

Transport companies can deliver the item much faster, around 3–7 days, and often cheaper. But they only solve the logistics part. They do not inspect the item, verify that it matches the listing, record its condition, check the serial number, supervise packaging, or provide a trusted report to the buyer.

3. Direct payment and shipping

This is the usual workaround, but it requires too much trust. The seller wants payment before shipping, and the buyer is afraid to pay before receiving the item.

4. Cargo surveyors / inspection services

I found that similar services exist in B2B logistics, but they are usually not packaged for simple private person-to-person deals. They are often designed for cargo, warehouses, imports, containers, insurance cases, or corporate logistics — not for a private buyer purchasing one expensive used item from another city.

So right now I am coping with the problem manually: discussing with the buyer, comparing delivery options, looking for a trusted way to verify and ship the item, and trying to reduce risk through photos, videos, documents, insurance, and transport company tracking.

But this still feels fragmented. There is no simple service that combines inspection, photo/video proof, packaging, carrier handover, insurance support, and a clear report for both sides.

4. How much are you willing to pay for the solution?

For a complete solution, I would be willing to pay a one-time fee depending on the value of the item and the depth of inspection.

For an item worth around $1,000–$1,500, I would pay about $80–$130 for a trusted inspection, photo/video report, packaging supervision, carrier handover, tracking number verification, and insurance support.

For more expensive items, I would accept a higher price:

$150–$250 for items worth $2,000–$5,000;
$250+ if a category expert is involved, for example for laptops, GPUs, musical equipment, industrial tools, or other technical items.

I would prefer a one-time payment per transaction rather than a subscription, because this problem appears only when buying or selling expensive used items remotely.
